Constructing Contour Maps
Objective: Construct topo
maps of objects and time
horizons from 3D seismic data.
Learn how to associate a grid of numbers with
a 3-D physical object.
Learn about scaling, units, and 3-D visualization.
- Topographic Maps
- Explain idea of topographic map. Break up group
into science teams of two kids.
- Have kids place hand on gridded sheet of paper.
Measure elevation of hand surface at each grid point.
Place elevation values in each pixel.
Create a color scale that relates
elevation to color...now color map of numbers.
- Repeat above exercise with secret objects.
Let kids figure out which map belongs to which
- Seismic Time Maps
- Explain principles of oil formation:
traps, source rock, reservoir rock. Demonstrate
how water flows into a porous rock. Demonstrate how
cooking oil floats on water. Talk about
how oil gets trapped.

- Show seismic section next to rock with layers.
Seismic camera takes pictures of rocks..and it
looks like a road cut.
- Break up group
into energy companies of two kids/company.
- Hand out seismic sections and base map.
Seismic sections are from Gulf of Mexico
and 2 seconds of two-way-traveltime
corresponds to about 1 mile in depth.
Have kids time the yellow event, and map times to base
map. Contour times similar
to previous exercise; find highest point
to drill for oil.
